The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) is inviting undergraduate students across Nigeria to participate in its Annual National Undergraduate Essay Competition. This yearly initiative promotes academic excellence, encourages original ideas, and empowers Nigerian youths to contribute to the development of the nation’s oil and gas sector.
The NCDMB Annual National Undergraduate Essay Competition provides a platform for students to showcase critical thinking, research skills, and creativity while gaining national recognition and access to life-changing rewards.
About the NCDMB Annual National Undergraduate Essay Competition
The competition is organized by NCDMB to engage undergraduates in meaningful discussions around local content, national development, and sustainable practices in the oil and gas industry. It is one of the board’s flagship youth development programs aimed at building capacity and rewarding innovation.
The foundation for NCDMB was laid in 2001 when former President Olusegun Obasanjo inaugurated the Presidential Committee on Local Content in the Oil and Gas Industry.
The NCDMB Essay contest is open only to 100-200 level students in public and private tertiary institutions in Nigeria, including polytechnics and colleges of education.
Requirements
To be considered for the competitions, you must meet the following conditions:
- To ensure fair participation and equal opportunity, the competition has established the following eligibility requirements:
- Academic Status: Open to full-time undergraduate students currently enrolled in Nigerian universities and polytechnics in their first and second year of studies.
- Essay Requirements: Essays must be original work, 1500 words maximu, and address the announced topic for the year: “Sustaining Local Content Policies in The Transforming Oil And Gas Industry”
- Documentation: Participants must provide valid student ID, and upload admission letter and a recent passport photograph during the time of registration.
- Team Participation: Individual participation only. Team submissions are not allowed in this competition.
- All essays must be original works specifically written for the competition.
Benefits
The NCDMB Annual National Undergraduate Essay Competition offers rewards that extend beyond financial support. Winners benefit from recognition, capacity-building, and opportunities for future growth.
Prizes will be awarded as follows:
- ₦1,000,000 for 1st place
- ₦700,000 for 2nd place
- ₦500,000 for 3rd and
- All top 10 national finalists shall each receive a laptop
- The winning essay will be published in the NCDMB’s in-house magazine, Local Content Digest.

Selection Criteria and Process
Entries are evaluated based on strict academic and ethical standards. The judging panel, made up of experts and professionals in academia and the oil and gas sector, assess submissions using the following criteria:
- Originality of ideas
- Depth of research and analysis
- Clarity, coherence, and logical flow of arguments
- Relevance of essay to the theme
- Grammar, style, and overall presentation
After the evaluation stage, shortlisted candidates may be invited for interviews or presentations before final winners are announced publicly.
How to Apply
Applying for the NCDMB Annual National Undergraduate Essay Competition is straightforward. Interested candidates should:
Essays will be judged based on: Clarity of Expression, Spelling and Grammar, Originality of thought, Depth of Analysis, Relevance to Industry, and Conformity to Contest Rules.
All essays will be subjected to a plagiarism check (software application) to determine originality.
Short-listed candidates will be invited for a third and final interactive assessment on or before September 15, 2025.
The award/prize giving ceremony is on September 26, 2025.
The winning essay will be published in the NCDMB’s in-house magazine, Local Content Digest.
