The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), a Federal Government agency responsible for developing indigenous human capacity and petroleum technology for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, invites applications for its 2026 Overseas MSc and PhD Scholarships.

Eligibility Criteria
PTDF Scholarship eligibility depends on academic performance and relevance to the oil and gas industry.
For MSc Applicants
• Minimum of Second Class Upper 2.1
• Second Class Lower 2.2 with relevant industry experience
• Completed NYSC
• Five O Level credits including English and Mathematics
• Computer literacy
• Verified National Identity Number
• Statement of Purpose not more than 500 words
For PhD Applicants
• Minimum of Second Class Lower 2.2 and a strong postgraduate degree
• Completed NYSC
• Five O Level credits including English and Mathematics
• Computer literacy
• Verified National Identity Number
• Research proposal not more than five pages

Required Documents (Mandatory)
Applicants for PTDF Scholarship are required to scan and upload clear copies of the following documents during online application:
- First Degree Certificate or Statement of Result
- NYSC Discharge Certificate
- WAEC/GCE/SSCE/NECO results and the relevant PIN(s) (to enable online verification)
- Recent passport photograph
- Local Government Identification Letter
- Master’s Degree Certificate (PhD applicants only)
- Evidence of membership of relevant professional associations
Structure of PTDF Scholarship
The PTDF Overseas MSc Scholarship and PTDF Overseas PhD Scholarship run through partner universities.
Study countries include the UK, Germany, France, and Malaysia.
UK PhD follows a split site model. Research takes place at CPESK Kaduna and approved UK universities. These include Robert Gordon University, University of Strathclyde, and University of Portsmouth.
PTDF approved courses focus on petroleum, energy, engineering, and related fields. PTDF approved universities meet PTDF standards.
Selection Process, Criteria and Requirements
PTDF scholarships are highly competitive. Only candidates who demonstrate outstanding merit and suitability will be considered.
Following initial screening based on submitted qualifications, the top applicants in each category from each State will be invited for an interview. A selection committee will assess candidates using (but not limited to) the following criteria:
- Academic merit (quality of degrees, complete academic transcripts, and relevant professional qualifications)
- Relevant publications (PhD applicants only)
- Membership of professional bodies
- Viability and relevance of the study plan / research proposal
- Relevance of prior studies to the oil and gas industry and the proposed programme/research
